Chapter Forty-Two

President Agapov sat at his desk, twiddling his thumbs, looking at the photograph of his late son. The incessant whistling of the wind outside was touching his last nerve. The phone call from President Sheeran had left him on edge. He knew that killing Martini was going to leave President Sheeran feeling the same way he was feeling. It wouldn’t lead to a conventional war with boots on the ground, but it would lead to a private war between them – which was perhaps more dangerous. There’d be no rules. POTUS wouldn’t have to worry about justifying his actions to Congress. He’d just use America’s resources to destroy the Kremlin’s leader.

Agapov was beginning to feel like it was piling on top of him. His wife was barely surviving without their son. She wouldn’t survive at all without her husband. He didn’t place much consideration on his own welfare if this escalated, but he worried about it destroying her – and it would. She’d hit the bottle, living off vodka ever since the news from Libya arrived at the Kremlin.

What was he going to do? He was screwed either way. The man responsible for their dead son needed to go. Martini was now in his country, taking down agents, making Russia look weak. He had to bring a swift conclusion to it.

He watched on his computer screen as news reports across Russia showed less and less people on the streets, getting home before the curfew came into effect. The military was everywhere. The sky was being watched. Road and rail networks were sealed tight. There was nowhere to go. Martini and his accomplices would eventually turn up. Then he’d end this.

He wheeled his chair back from the desk, stood up, shoved his hands in his pockets and sauntered across the room, looking out the window, snow drifting down, dancing in the wind. Freezing temperatures outside. Nobody could survive the harsh Russian weather.

They’ll eventually turn up, he thought.

The familiar clap of hard heels echoed outside. He allowed himself a moment to smile in appreciation for his faithful chief of staff. He didn’t bother to turn, just waited for the door to knock. It did. ‘Enter,’ he said, still watching the hazardous weather outside. Koslov’s reflection appeared in the window. He kept looking outside. ‘What is your report?’

‘Sir, we have heightened security all around the country. The curfew is about to come into effect. According to our CCTV, Martini has not left the Moscow area. He will not be hard to find.’

‘Very good.’

‘There is something else, sir.’

‘There always is.’

‘Sir, this Brendan Cleary from Ireland, who is now in Russia along with MI6 Agent Greenwood.’

‘What about him?’

‘He is as much to blame for what has happened as Martini. Perhaps even more.’

‘Go on.’

‘Brendan Cleary had gone to Libya to find the killers of the woman he loved. She had been killed in one of those bomb attacks in Belfast. Martini didn’t even know this guy existed until those events unfolded. Martini, at the request of his Irish family, had gone to Libya to help his brother.
